What a week, what a week. I know everyone’s been stressing nonstop about millions of midterms, but there’s no way you could miss all the buzz around campus. But just in case you have been hiding under a rock (or holed up in Bostock), here’s our weekly roundup of fashion news, Duke stories, and the rest of our favorite things.
What, this isn’t normal? – Duke’s messiest fall shenanigans finally got some national recognition from Fox Sports. They came to Durham with their “College Experiment: Hot Girl” series to document the experience that is a Duke student tailgate. (You might have caught the video blowing up your news feed.) Calling it “one of the best-kept secrets of game-day partying,” we spotted some of you Form fans getting national press coverage! (Admittedly, tailgate does not comprise our best fashion moments, but it’s okay. We understand.)
Karen Ohno…I mean Owen… – What? Another Duke sex scandal? … Enough said.
Eyes Wide Shut – French Vogue celebrated 90 years of amazing fashion with a decadent masquerade ball in Paris this weekend. All of fashion’s elite came out wearing any variety of masks, from beautiful and intricate to truly bizarre (oh, Jean Paul Gaultier, we do love you) to homemade and Gaga-esque (see Tyra Banks, who cut up cheap fishnet stockings and pulled them over her head). Oh, how we dream of partying with fashion royalty – it definitely looks like a memorable night.

Prêt-à-porter Pioneer – Gareth Pugh defied fashion’s modus operandi by opting to show fashion editors an 11-minute film of his Spring/Summer 2011 collection rather than stage a traditional fashion show. Explaining, “It is liberating for a designer not to have to worry about a show. You can get the models to be even more expressive and do it all in a more concise way…I follow my own heart and hope that if I am successful, film can become an alternative to showing clothes.” What do you think? Is this the way of the future, or is his road less traveled going to be a one-time occurrence?
I Die! – Rumor has it Rachel Zoe is pregnant. Reported in OK!, we just have to wonder: what will this mean for The Rachel Zoe Project?! (But then, we’re not sure how we feel about Rachel without Brad, anyway.) And is it even true? We’ll know soon enough – that tiny frame can’t exactly hide a baby bump. Bananas!
Going Native – Diddy sporting a kilt at a Scotland show this week. In a word: um, wow.
Snapshot of the Week –
Let's be honest: who doesn't have a celeb crush on Blake Lively? (Image, JustJared)
Spotted: Blake Lively hushing the rowdy paparazzi while on the set of Gossip Girl. Can I be her? Please?
iPhound A Way! – I know I’m one of many Verizon-ites who don’t have an iPhone simply because we cannot. At this point, personally, I’ll never part with my BlackBerry, but for those of you who are less addicted, check out Line2, an app that can give your iPod touch phone capabilities! It also turns regular iPhones into dual-mode phones, placing calls over wi-fi rather than AT&T. Anyone tried it yet? We’re wondering how well it works.
Fashion for All – French department store Galeries Lafayette broke a Guinness World Record for the biggest fashion show when they staged shows across 50 locations in France, culminating in a simultaneous mega-show in the streets of Paris and Berlin. Over 4000 regular people participated as models, wearing their own clothes and effectively democratizing fashion week. (Check out this video clip from Reuters. Full discloure: I am pretty sure I spotted one of the models wearing my prom dress.)
With so much going on, we have to wonder: what can possibly be in store for next week? Stay tuned…
Lauren
